Shadow Wave - Ceramic Bowl

Intro

This bowl follows the same carving process as my other water-inspired pieces, but with a different glaze altogether. I used a black glaze this time, then carved the same style of curved lines and dots into it while it was still workable.

Design

The carving itself carries the same idea as the rest of the series: curved lines and scattered dots meant to echo water in motion, carved freehand rather than planned out in advance. What changes this piece is the glaze. I applied a transparent layer over the black, and the combination softened it into more of a grey than a true black. This is something I didn't fully plan for, but ended up liking. It gives the carved lines a bit more depth, since the grey catches light differently depending on the angle, and it sits somewhere between moody and soft rather than flat and dark.

Conclusion

At 21cm across and 9.5cm deep, this bowl has enough depth for everyday use: food safe for serving, but equally suited to holding jewelry, keys, or anything else you want gathered in one place. Handmade and carved in small batches in a home studio in Malta.
