Ceramic Dish with Sgraffito Art

Inspiration

Inspired by one of my favourite ink pen artworks, this handmade ceramic dish brings my original portrait design into a new form. The piece features a young woman with flowing hair and flowers crossing diagonally over her eyes, recreated in clay using the sgraffito technique.

With a 26.5 cm diameter, the dish is finished with BOTZ Stoneware Engobe Yellow. I carved the design directly into the clay, creating flowing lines and patterns that follow the movement of the hair. As ceramic carving allows for less intricate detail than ink drawing, I adapted the original design to suit the material while preserving its distinctive character.

The hair combines two repeating patterns. One features stylised grapevine tendrils, one of my favourite decorative motifs, while the other consists of irregular circular drops and circles. The flowers are defined by simple, clean lines, creating a contrast with the patterned hair. The face, lips and neck remain free of decoration, allowing the portrait to stand out.

This dish is a special interpretation of an artwork that feels particularly close to my heart. It brings together my passion for drawing and ceramics, translating an intricate ink illustration into a handcrafted piece with its own character.
