Intro

This bowl continues the same blue slip technique as my other carved pieces, but with a different pattern language entirely. Instead of flowing lines, the design is built from repetition and symmetry: eight carved sections dividing the surface, each one holding one of two motifs. It's a quieter, more structured piece, but it still carries that handmade, carved-by-hand feel through every line.

Inspiration

The pattern only fully reveals itself when the bowl is turned upside down. From the base, you can see eight distinct sections working around the piece: four carved with clusters of dots in varying sizes, and four carved with a simple leaf motif. Alternating between the two, the sections radiate outward from the center point, so the whole base reads like a flower opening up, petal by petal. I wanted the underside of the bowl to be just as considered as the inside: something you'd notice and enjoy even after the bowl is empty and set down on its base.

Conclusion

This bowl works well for everyday use: serving, storing small items, or just sitting out as a decorative piece where the base pattern can be appreciated too. Since each one is hand-carved individually, the spacing and depth of the dots and leaves shift slightly from piece to piece, so what you get is genuinely one of a kind. Handbuilt and glazed in small batches in my home studio in Malta.
