Azure Wave - Ceramic Dish

• Handmade ceramic dish, hand-carved design in azure blue Botz glaze

Intro

I built up a few layers of azure blue Botz, giving it a depth of colour that's hard to get with just one coat. While it was still a bit wet, I carved directly into the surface: curved lines and dots worked freehand across the glaze.

Design

The whole piece is built around the idea of water. The curved lines echo ripples, and the dots scattered between them feel like droplets caught mid-motion. Carving into the glaze while it was still workable meant I could follow the flow as it came rather than sketching it out first, so the lines have a natural, slightly uneven rhythm to them. That's part of the point — it reads more like something water actually left behind than a pattern drawn on top.

Conclusion

At 16cm across and 4cm deep, this dish is a good size for daily use: food safe for serving small bites, olives, or snacks, but just as suited to holding rings, earrings, or whatever tends to pile up on a counter or nightstand. Handmade and carved in small batches in a home studioin Malta.
